Become a Foster Parent Today!
step 1
Orientation
After the initial contact you will be invited to take part in an orientation where you will meet with Hope Hill Foster Care staff and potentially some other interested families to learn what it will mean for you to become a foster parent. In some cases a staff member may meet with you individually to answer your questions and provide information.
step 2
step 3
Training
Once you have completed the initial application and background check, you will begin the pre-service training process. Every prospective foster parent is required to attend at least 36 hours of pre-service training. This training is designed to help you make an informed decision about becoming a foster parent and to equip you with the skills you will need in order to be successful. In training you will learn what foster parenting is all about – what it takes, what to expect, the obligations, challenges and rewards! Topics covered in training include:
-
Grief, separation and loss
-
Attachment
-
Behavior management/de-escalation
-
Cultural competency
-
Dynamics of abuse and neglect
-
Effects of chemical dependency/abuse
-
Working with birth parents
-
Independent living skills
-
CPR/First Aid
step 4
Home Study
During this step, one or two Hope Hill Foster Care staff members will visit your home to interview you and any other family members residing in your home. Typically, interviews are conducted throughout the course of at least two visits. The interviews give us an opportunity to:
-
Gather background information about you and your family
-
Gain and understanding of your motivations to become a foster parent
-
Ensure that foster parenting is a good fit for you and your family
-
Ensure that you will be able to provide a safe and nurturing home environment
-
Make sure you home has enough space to accommodate additional youth
-
Observe interactions between family members to assess family functioning, relationships and parenting styles
step 5
Licensing and Certification
Once all training, paperwork and the home study is complete we will review all of your family’s information and make a determination as to your readiness to certify you as a foster parent. Once certified you will be ready to accept children into your home!
